Budgeting for Promotions

Our newsletters, Tweets and website are packed with ideas for low cost and free ways to promote your practice. Of course, if you want a balanced portfolio, you'll need to consider some paid promotional activities, such as:

 Google Adwords

 Leafleting

 Advertising in local press

 etc

So, how much should you spend on your marketing?

This is a question we're often asked when we run our Marketing courses.

The answer is - how long is a piece of string? 

We've both spent varying amounts over the years, progressively less as our word of mouth referrals continue to grow. However we both keep a background level of paid promotions ticking along so that there's always some guaranteed exposure at all times.

Bear in mind that a typical press advert will cost £50-£100, parish and local magazines will often be less. Google Adwords can be financed in £50 chunks. Getting 1,000 leaflets delivered will cost £35 - £50.

Getting the costs in perspective

Although these sound like chunky sums, it's worth thinking about them in terms of 'Client hours', ie £200 a month spend on advertising is equivalent to one new client a week. Doesn't sound so bad then, does it?

Setting a budget helps with your decision making too. When you get those nuisance calls from companies running advertising scams, you can genuinely say that your marketing budget has been allocated.
