What marketing has worked for you?

It's always good to review your marketing!

With just one month left of 2017, now is a good time to start planning your promotional activities for 2018, if you haven’t already done so.

A good way to start is to review this year’s activities and see what worked well.  If you have been taking our advice you will have been active across a wide range of promotional media.  So make a list of what you did this year under the following headings:

Mainstream media (newspapers/magazines):

·         Did you place any adverts?

·         Did you submit any press releases / articles?

·         Anything else?

Online promotions:

·         Did you use Google Adwords?

·         Did you use Facebook advertising options?

·         Did you use Twitter’s new advertising scheme?

·         Did you update your entry on any online directories?

·         Did you send any e-newsletters?

·         Anything else?

Social Media:

·         Did you post on your Facebook business page regularly?

·         Did you Tweet regularly?

·         Did you interact with your followers / other businesses on Facebook and Twitter?

·         Did you explore other social media, eg Instagram, Whatsapp?

·         Anything else?

Website:

·         Did you update your website at least 4 times during the year?

·         If you have a blog, did you keep it up to date?

·         Did you check that any links are still working?

·         Anything else?

Events:

·         Did you attend any promotional events this year?

·         Did you give any talks this year?

·         Did you run any workshops this year?

·         Anything else?

What worked well?

If you said ‘yes’ to any of the above, how successful were they?  If you are in the habit of asking clients how they found out about you, it should be possible to be accurate about how many clients you generated from each approach.  If you haven’t been keeping stats, gut feel is the next best thing.

So, what did work best?  One of the tenets of the Solution Focused approach is ‘if it works, do more of it’.  If something worked well this year, make sure you include it in next year’s plan, and do it bigger and better if possible.

If something didn’t work so well, what can you do to tweak the way you are doing it to make it more effective?

If you didn't get around to any of the marketing items on the list above, choose one or two to implement next year and plan them in.  If it’s something you’ve never done before, remember there is plenty of help out there – YouTube is a great source of step by step instructions.

Draw up a plan for 2018

Finally, draw up a plan in a way that works for you:

·         A wall planner

·         Reminders on your mobile phone

·         An old fashioned diary

·         An online scheduling tool

It’s a good idea to earmark a set time each week to focus on your promotional activities, eg every Monday morning or Thursday afternoon.  When planning, remember to include preparation tasks as well as the activity itself.  It's amazing how time flies by, which is why making a diary note helps you achieve all that you want to achieve in 2018.

Have a very happy Christmas!
